The creators of Fortnite and the Unreal Engine are getting a nice cash flow injection from Sony.
Sony released some information about it’s most recent capital spend. It is investing $250M in Epic Games, the developers of the popular game Fortnite and creators of the Unreal Engine. The investment lands Sony with a 1.4% ownership in the company. This deal is supposed to lead to “a more open and accessible digital ecosystem for all consumers and content creators.”
Sony is attempting to get an edge over its main competitor the Xobox Series X by the investment. Epic Games has stated that their position was to remain impartial to the console wars, but when they are getting such a massive investment from the PS5 guys, it’s hard to think that wouldn’t make some type of impact on them moving forward.
Either way, Sony can’t really lose. The Unreal Engine is used by a vast amount of games and is the defacto toolset for building many popular games. And, Fortnite is a sensation in itself and the earlier Fortnite live concerts were a hit. Sony very well may bring some of its expertise and users to the Fortnite table so it’s a win – win situation for the pair.
